Park, Young-Bae. 2002. Special senses in Chaucer’s Vocabulary. The History of English, 14. In the medieval period there were no dictionaries to define the meaning of words and since many words were created for a particular poem, the boundary between connotation and denotation was much ill-defined or even non-existent. In this paper the senses and uses of the words mede, hyre, and guerdoun in some of Chaucer's works are analysed in terms of synonymy. Their complex stylistic and semantic structures will also be investigated.
