Stress and intonation in English are known as one of the most difficult problems for linguists to solve. Naturally they have tempted linguists to find out what they really mean. But different scholars have different views on the subject. Such differences are characterized by the different linguistic theories on which actual analyses are based. This study focuses on the difference in the approach taken by American structuralists and generative phonologists in describing English stress and intonation, and will facilitate our grasp of the nature of the phenomenon. The fundamental difference between the two theories is that American structuralists regard stress and intonation as idiosyncratic phonological units in the representation of words in a sentence, while generative phonologists regard stress as a feature which can be derived as a phonetic surface representation by phonological rules.
