Goh, Gwang-Yoon. 2002. Promoting Factors in the Advent of the Prepositional Passive. The History of English, 14. A great many studies have been done on the advent of the English prepositional passive in English historical linguistics, producing various proposals for a better account of the change. Most earlier studies, however, put their emphasis on certain isolated aspects or promoting factors involved, thereby causing considerable controversy over many important issues raised rather than providing a satisfactory account of the linguistic change.

The main goal of this paper is to provide a global picture of the advent of the prepositional passive in which important insights and proposals from earlier studies are reconsidered for the relevance of their roles in explaining the change and are complemented or augmented by other contributory factors in bringing about the change. Thus, this paper first reexamines major proposals from previous studies, trying to re-evaluate the significant role of each, and then it discusses several other promoting factors which, although indispensible for a complete account of the change, have often been neglected or ignored in most earlier studies
