Park, Deok-Jae. 2000. On the Role of Grammar in Second Language Learning. The Journal of English Grammar 4.2, 113-127. This paper attempts to examine the effects and the roles of form-focused instruction in the context of the university-level foreign language classroom. On the basis of a critical review of the previous empirical studies, this paper reports on an exploratory study, conducted at Kwangwoon University, which examines and compares English language students' views regarding the benefit of a focus on form and their psychological variables in language learning. The study also touches on the emphasis of conscious-raising through the use of grammar tasks. The grammar tasks designed to promote concentration on grammar can be the most effective type of classroom activity. Formal instruction and communicative language teaching should be integrated through the use of grammar tasks. (Kwangwoon University)
